REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Alzheimer's disease affects not only the nearly five million people in the U.S. diagnosed, but the millions of caregivers who support their loved ones. Aegis Living, a national leader in assisted living and memory care communities is changing the way those afflicted with Alzheimer's disease are cared for, helping lead the industry to offer the best in assisted living care for those afflicted with the disease.

Since its inception in 1997, Aegis Living has made caring for those with memory loss a key component of their service. It accomplishes this by enlisting best care ideas into everyday living practices. Aegis works with industry experts like David Troxel and Teepa Snow, provides the Life's Neighborhood(TM) program, offers family support and community outreach, within each of the companies 35 communities to make life better.

"Gone are the days when those with Alzheimer's received care that was less than optimal. Today we understand so much more about the disease and how to care for those afflicted with environments and activities that are so much better suited to their needs," said Dwayne J. Clark, chairman and CEO of Aegis Living. "I applaud the association for dedicating a month to helping raise awareness and understanding of the disease which brings further action and hopefully a cure."

One example of specialized care available today is Life's Neighborhood, a nationally recognized program developed by Aegis Living. It improves the quality of life and increases enjoyment for people living with Alzheimer's by decreasing stress and anxiety. This is achieved through recreating the familiarity and comfort of a family home set in the 1940s and 1950s. The staff incorporates the Snoeselen philosophy of care in which sensory stimulation is used as a method of relaxation and redirection, reducing residents anxiety and distress when needed.

Beyond caring for residents, Aegis Living assists family, friends and the community at large. Here are helpful tips in moving forward once a diagnosis has been made for caregivers.

Look to the Positive

It can be helpful to realize that a worldwide movement is underway to find new treatments and ways to prevent or stop the disease.

Educate Yourself

Understand the disease better, and learn what options are available. Visit reputable web sites, read books and literature and attend lectures. There is a lot of information at your disposal.

Use Community Services

Don't wait too long to enlist the help of the Alzheimer's Association, support groups, day centers and others. Use these services early and often.

Discuss Care Options

Know that while most of the care is provided at home by friends and family, many do require additional care. What for example would happen if a caregiver got sick? Make a plan for the future, investigate residential care programs in your community.

Acknowledge Differences

Conflict among siblings or relatives is not uncommon. When conflict occurs, seek a trusted mediator to help resolve differences. Denial is common but eventually fades in most cases. And remember to stay focused on what's best for the person now rather than past wishes and promises.
