Four Time World Champion Carina Moreno Arrives In Mexico
By Ryan Moses
Watsonville boxer Carina Moreno will return to the ring Saturday after an eight-month layoff when she attempts to defend her World Boxing Council minimumweight title against Anabel Ortiz in Toluca, Mexico.
Moreno [21-1, 6 KOs] last fought Feb. 6, when she defeated Sharon Gaines in an eight-round unanimous decision. Moreno didn't expect to go so long without another fight, but had two fights cancelled.
"Obviously there might be a little bit of rust, but I got ready for a fight in July and another one in September," Moreno said in a phone interview from Mexico City, where she arrived Sunday. "I know a fight is different than sparring. It might affect me a little bit, but after two or three rounds, I'll be all right."
This will be the fourth time Moreno tries to defend her WBC belt for the weight class of 105 pounds or less. Moreno also owns Women's International Boxing Association, International Female Boxers Association and North American Boxing Federation titles.
The fight will be at the Gimnasio Del Imcufide in Toluca, about 40 miles west of Mexico City. It is Moreno's first outside the U.S.
"I've always wanted to fight here in Mexico," Moreno said. "I have family members here in Mexico. I have a brother who lives here who's never seen me fight, so I'm happy he'll see me for the first time." Read More.
