Project Nur Presents Muslim Film Festival Screening of Virgin Diaries

MIAMI, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Project Nur will be hosting a screening of "The Virgin Diaries" at Florida International University in the Raphael Diaz Balart Law Building Auditorium at 8PM on October 28th, a film dealing with the controversial issues of virginity, marriage, sex and "appropriate" relationships in Muslim countries. These topics are very rarely talked about publicly and in most Muslim communities are considered taboo. Fatiha, the young Moroccan protagonist in the film, breaks through the silence and goes on a journey through Morocco challenging and questioning Islamic religious leaders and ordinary people about their dogmatic views on marriage, Islam, sex and virginity.

This film challenges and provokes the viewer to question their beliefs on these issues and makes them determine whether their beliefs are logical, reasonable and justifiable. This film will help people open their minds to the views of people of different cultures and backgrounds and will therefore forward Project Nur's goals of promoting understanding, tolerance, justice and coexistence. It will also serve as a stepping stone for the Muslim community to engage in discussion publicly amount these "taboo" ideas that are indeed vital, important, and unavoidable in today's modern society.

The Virgin Diaries is an engaging, personal documentary made by independent film producer, Jessica Woodworth. It has been recommended by many and has been popular in religion, theology, culture, and human rights related courses on campuses around the world. The Virgin Diaries is an important movie that will serve to further understand contemporary Islam and traditional Middle Eastern cultures.

Project Nur ("PN") is a "new light on campus" that creates a distinct and alternative Muslim voice: a civic identity grounded in pluralism and moderate thinking and action, one that dispels the perception of a monolithic Muslim voice. PN is a student-led initiative of the American Islamic Congress which was created after 9/11 as a non-religious, civic initiative challenging increasingly negative perceptions of Muslims by advocating responsible leadership and understanding. PN emphasizes civic action, and does so with the goal of forging a cohesive and mutually respectful multicultural community. It is PN's belief that only in taking action with different people, addressing issues affecting all humans, do we truly come to understand the meaning and reality of co-existence. As such, PN is a multi-cultural and diverse community of civic-minded university students who are committed towards the advancement of human rights, civil rights, social justice, tolerance, understanding, and co-existence. www.Projectnur.org
