Redskins' Devin Thomas and Local Companies Team up to Raise Funds for Local Charity, College Bound
WASHINGTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Public High School students in the Nation's Capital received a major
boost through the College Bound Charity Golf Tournament on Monday
October 19th at Reston National Golf Course.
The tournament lead sponsors, Rollins-PCI Construction and Begal
Enterprises each donated over $5,000 to College Bound, Inc., a
Washington, D.C. based 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, that offers
public school students in grades 8-12 academic enrichment and resources
to prepare for and succeed in college.
The tournament featured nearly 100 participants and over 15 volunteers,
all supporting College Bound on a crisp autumn afternoon. The tournament
was also used to help launch College Bound's "11 Campaign" , which as
Executive Director Kenneth Ward stated "is designed to start a dialogue
and to help bring awareness" to the 11 DC students that drop out of
school every school day.
The post-tournament festivities included an award ceremony, with an
"Athletic Brain Award" presented to Devin Thomas, #11 of the Washington
Redskins and a vocal supporter of College Bound, a silent auction and
raffle. The Washington Redskins, Wizards and Mystics as well as many
other organizations donated items for the silent auction to help raise
money.
Current and past student recipients of the academic mentoring services
provided by College Bound were in attendance and as they assisted in the
award presentations, many shared their own personal experiences - each
of them very moving - on how College Bound has made a difference in
their lives.
$1,000 sponsors included Brand Resources Group, Heritage Financial
Consultants and The Glass Packaging Institute. The Westley Family
Foundation was also recognized for its substantial annual funding
commitment to College Bound. In addition, Rollins-PCI Construction was
joined by many of its subcontractor and vendor partners, who were proud
to support a worthy cause. Teams participating included Sparkle
Painting, The Electric Shop, CRW Mechanical, Spartan Electric, Thompson
Industries, Sport Chevrolet, A&M Drywall, Pro-Build and Clifton
Gunderson. Ray Armstrong from Sparkle Painting sponsored a foursome and
stated that he was proud to be a part of the event and "that it is very
important to support the kids."
One of the tournament Co-Chairman and President of Rollins-PCI
Construction, Barry Lake, is on the board of College Bound and he and
his wife Nicole who also mentor in the program, knows the charity golf
tournament has given the 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization a boost.
"We want the charity golf tournament to provide awareness for the
amazing things College Bound does and can continue to do," Lake said.
"All of the money raised in the tournament goes straight to ensuring
that College Bound can continue its great programs in support of local
D.C. public school students."
