Step 2A Cure Joins PGA Tour to Promote Health and Raise Funds for Prostate Cancer Research
SANTA MONICA, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Step 2A Cure, a healthy and fun way for PGA tour spectators to raise
awareness and money for prostate cancer, premieres this month at the
Charles Schwab Cup Championship at the Sonoma Golf Club in California.
During the four-day PGA golf tournament, October 29 through November 1,
spectators will be able to sign up, make a pledge and follow tour
players through the 18-hole course during competition.
"Walking is a great way to exercise and improve overall health," says
Chris Conway, director of golf programs for the Prostate Cancer
Foundation (PCF). "Increasingly, scientific findings are indicating that
changes in lifestyle-namely better nutrition and exercise routinesâhave
an important effect on survivorship and prevention for many cancers. We
are very pleased to offer this health-focused event that supports
research for prostate cancer on the PGA Tour."
Attendees of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship can register online by
making a simple $20 donation at www.step2acure.org.
Additional pledges can also be made on the site. All steps taken during
the event will be logged daily and all proceeds will benefit advanced
research through the PCF. Accusplit, renowned manufacturer of quality
stopwatches and pedometers, is sponsoring the Step 2A Cure event and
supplying the pedometers for participants.
Nutrition and Exercise is one of several focus areas of research funded
by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The PCF recently published a new
guide, Nutrition, Exercise and Prostate Cancer that is available,
free of charge to the public. The comprehensive guide covers a wide
variety of topics including an easy-to-follow scientific discussion of
specific diet and nutrition recommendations, the effects of obesity on
cancer and other diseases, and a description of the benefits of regular
exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The 28-page guide is
authored by four of America's leading scientists and physicians working
in the field of prostate cancer and nutrition research. It can be
downloaded or ordered at www.pcf.org.
The Charles Schwab Cup offers $2.1 million in annuity bonus money to the
top-five finishers at season's end. Points are awarded weekly to the
top-ten finishers and ties in official money events. The winner will be
awarded a $1 million annuity and the second-through fifth-place
finishers $500,000, $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 annuities. The event
was first played in 1990 at Hyatt Dorado Beach (East) in Dorado, Puerto
Rico. The 2009 Championship will mark the seventh year at the Sonoma
Golf Club.
