NEW YORK (EWORLDWIRE) Oct 15, 2009
The public is invited to join the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company for TRIBE, part of Nextbook's Jewish Body Week at the Museum of Jewish Heritage - Living Memorial to the Holocaust. This work finds inspiration from Judaism and explores the human body as a source of reflection, strength, humor and celebration.
Following the performance, the Company will offer a workshop on simple folk dances from around the world.
All tickets for Tribe are $10, $7 students/seniors, $5 members and are available online at http://www.mjhnyc.org or by calling the Museum box office at 646.437.4202.
Tribe, a contemporary dance based on ancient themes, features original music composed by Shawn Baltazor and Roxy Coss played live by a jazz quintet and violinist Sarah Geller.
Commissioned by Nextbook, the Company has been developing Tribe since the spring, when invited to join the festival. The work is being created specifically for the Museum's Edmond J. Safra Hall, which is a 350-seat plus concert hall. The score commissioned by the Company will take advantage of the acoustics and intimacy of the hall. This is a dynamic, communal piece for seven dancers including the choreographer.
A post-program Q&A will be facilitated by dance critic Elizabeth Zimmer immediately followed by an interactive workshop. Don't miss this opportunity to join in the dance and meet the dancers!
Gwirtzman and Company will teach fun, easy-to-do folk dances from around the world accompanied by live music. This event is presented as part of Jewish Body Week a" a series of events in New York City exploring subjects raised in Melvin Konner's 2009 book, The Jewish Body.
