TELUS Deploys Fujitsu-Powered Next-Generation FLASHWAVE Optical Networking Platforms
RICHARDSON, Texas - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Fujitsu, a leading provider of business, information technology, and
communications solutions, announced today that Canadian
telecommunications corporation TELUS
has selected Fujitsu FLASHWAVE Packet Optical Networking
Platforms (Packet ONPs) for its next-generation converged Packet/TDM
optical network. This network will enable next-generation IP, Ethernet
and optical services and create a scalable infrastructure that will
encourage development and use of new multimedia applications by its
business and residential customers.
TELUS has begun deployment of the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE
9500 and FLASHWAVE 4100
ES Packet ONPs. Network planning, management, and professional
services support are being provided by the complete line of Fujitsu
NETSMART software solutions and Network Life Cycle Services.
"Our selection of Fujitsu packet optical networking platforms is part of
our strategy to create a fully converged packet optical network
throughout Canada, and place our customers at the forefront of broadband
capabilities," said Zouheir Mansourati, vice president of technology
strategy for TELUS. "The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP combines the
functionality of Connection-oriented Ethernet and SONET/SDH with the
flexibility of a ROADM in a single shelf. This combination enables
faster time to market, provides greatly expanded capacity for video and
wireless applications, and lowers the cost of delivering next-generation
and legacy services."
The pluggable ROADM option and patent-pending universal switch fabric of
the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP allow both Ethernet and SONET/SDH traffic
to be transported in their native framing formats to create a universal
optical infrastructure. The FLASHWAVE 4100 ES micro Packet ONP offers a
compact 2RU (3.5") modular solution for high concentrations of DS1, DS3,
and Ethernet services. Both platforms include integrated
Connection-oriented Ethernet technology that delivers the interface
flexibility, statistical multiplexing and packet aggregation benefits of
Ethernet with the QoS performance and security of SONET/SDH.
"TELUS and Fujitsu share a powerful network convergence vision that is
enabled by Packet Optical Networking," said Rod Naphan, vice president
of product and strategic planning at Fujitsu Network Communications.
"Packet Optical Networking supports the seamless integration of
Connection-oriented Ethernet and TDM traffic over a scalable,
ROADM-based network. The resulting packet optical transport and
aggregation solution will allow TELUS to bring a host of advanced
Ethernet, IP and broadband services to its business and residential
customers."
TELUS is using the NETSMART
2000 network design and planning tool to input communication
requirements and develop comprehensive network designs. Operations,
administration, maintenance and provisioning (OAM&P) tasks are
simplified through TELUS' use of the Fujitsu NETSMART 1500
Element Management System (EMS) and NETSMART
500 Graphical User Interface (GUI). These platforms deliver proven,
large scale service provisioning, database management, fault
sectionalization and advanced reporting required for the operational
robustness of highly available optical networks.
Fujitsu is providing TELUS with Network
Life Cycle Services to maximize network reliability for its
nationwide network. The service and support package selected by TELUS
will include 24x7x365 access to experienced Fujitsu personnel for
technical assistance and on-site support.
