AJC Disappointed by Russian Reluctance Over Iran Sanctions
NEW YORK, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Jewish Committee expressed disappointment at the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that further UN Security Council sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program would be "counterproductive."
"Now that talks with Iran are in motion, international unity is more critical than ever," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "Under any circumstances, it will be hard to make Iran's leaders engage meaningfully. They absolutely will not do so if they perceive divisions between the United States and its Security Council partners."
Lavrov was speaking following a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has been visiting key European capitals seeking support for tougher sanctions on Iran should negotiations prove inconclusive. Yesterday, the British government issued an order to "cease all business" with two Iranian entities, Bank Mellat and Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.
"We applaud Secretary Clinton's determined diplomacy," Harris said. "If we are to prevent the worst outcome of this crisis -- namely, an Iranian regime armed with nuclear weapons -- Tehran has to take seriously the prospect of tough, resolute sanctions."
