Gluten-Free is Much More Than Just a Trend

New Studies Show Positive Impact of Wheat-Free Diet

While the trendiness of gluten-free diets has been increasingly covered in the media, as stars like Oprah pick it up, the gluten-free diet should not be discounted as a passing phase.

The seriousness of gluten intolerance - especially for people with celiac disease-is a burgeoning issue in the medical field. The AFP reported that a recent study in Sweden concluded that people with celiac disease and digestive inflammation have an increased risk of death compared to the general population. Researchers stressed the importance of diagnosing celiac disease and even more minor digestive issues, as a proper diet can lead to "normalization."

Not only can a gluten-free diet for those with celiac disease and wheat allergies reduce the risk of a shortened life-span, but NaturalNews reports that preliminary research done on gluten-free, casein-free diets in autistic children contributed to "improvement in these children in numerous behavior areas." It is too soon to know for sure if this diet is directly linked to the behavioral improvement, but the early results do hold promise.

Patients with celiac disease and digestive problems should consult their physicians or a nutritionist about their diets and the appropriate resources for eating healthfully.
