Recognized for Reduced Emissions and Improving the Environment

Swift Transportation received an Environmental Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Transport Partnership for its leadership in conserving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from its transportation and freight activities. Swift Transportation is on the forefront of reducing the industry's carbon footprint. Swift's Clean Fleet is the first of its kind and the largest fleet of trucks committed to adopting the latest green technologies. Swift continually invests in the latest innovations to reduce its carbon footprint in its fleet of 16,500 trucks which helps to keep the environment clean for future generations. The EPA Environmental Excellence Award marks the 17th technology and service related award Swift has received in 2009.

Swift's President and COO Richard Stocking commented, "As a Charter Member of the EPA's SmartWay program, we are honored to receive this prestigious award. Our partnership with SmartWay demonstrates our commitment to the environment and to be best in class." Stocking continued, "Working with SmartWay, Swift has saved 1.68 million tons of CO2 emissions."

The Environmental Excellence Award joins the list of 17 awards presented to Swift to date in 2009. Stocking added, "As we continue on our journey to best in class, our customers and the public are recognizing our achievements and rewarding Swift based on our performance."

Swift Transportation was one of 37 companies and organizations, from among the Partnerships' more than 2100 Partners, to receive this distinction. The awards were announced today at the American Trucking Association's Annual Management Conference & Exhibit in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"The EPA is pleased to recognize these SmartWay Partners with a 2009 Excellence Award. I commend Swift Transportation for its leadership in promoting sustainable transportation practices through the SmartWay Transport Partnership," said Margo T. Oge, Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality, EPA. "These actions demonstrate a commitment to a cleaner environment and more secure energy supply."

SmartWay was introduced by the EPA and a select group of fifteen shipping and business leaders in 2004 as an innovative, market-based partnership to reduce fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollutants from the freight sector. Today, more than 2200 businesses and organizations have joined the Partnership, including companies of all sizes, from Fortune 500 companies to family-owned businesses, each working to improve their environmental performance.

Together, with the SmartWay Partnership, Swift Transportation and other members will eliminate six million tons of carbon dioxide that contribute to global warming, and save more than 540 million gallons of diesel fuel -- an economic savings of at least $2 billion a year.

Swift began operations in 1966 with just one truck and has grown as North America's largest truckload carrier. Swift's suite of transportation solutions is unmatched in the industry, with 40 terminals across the U.S. and Mexico. Swift Transportation is positioned to be your sole source provider for all your transportation needs including: Intermodal, Dry Van, Temperature Controlled, Dedicated, Container, Flatbed and more. Operating with over 43 years of experience in the industry, Swift has the capacity and competency to partner with customers when they need it most.
