Gov. Rick Perry Signs Taxpayer Protection Pledge
WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Texas Governor Rick Perry signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge today. The Pledge is a written commitment to Texas taxpayers to "oppose and veto any and all efforts to increase taxes."
"At a time when lawmakers in Washington are considering Cap & Trade legislation that is estimated to cost families upwards of $4,000 per year and a health care bill that will levy thousands of dollars in higher taxes on millions of families, Governor Perry's assurance that taxes won't be raised at the state level under his watch is as important as ever," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. "Americans for Tax Reform applauds Gov. Perry for making this important commitment Texans and encourages all candidates for office to sign the Pledge."
To date, 34 U.S. Senators and 172 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, seven governors and over 1,100 state legislators have signed the Pledge. In Texas 33 members of the legislature have taken the Pledge.
"Governor Perry's dedication to conservative principles and fiscal responsibility has facilitated the Lone Star State's tremendous economic growth during his tenure," added Norquist.
"Governor Perry has been a leader and pioneer on key issues ranging from tax reform, to government transparency, to tort reform."
Perry and Hutchison join Meg Whitman and Steve Poizner, the two top Republicans in the California gubernatorial race, as the most recent signers of the governors' Pledge.
