Leeds Point, NJ, September 29, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Yes, dogs can get bone cancer. Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in dogs. When given this diagnosis, overwhelmed dog owners often don't know where to turn for help. Bone Cancer Dogs, Inc was created to provide resources, support and hope. The website has the most comprehensive information about the diagnosis and management of canine bone cancer, with updates regarding treatment options, oncology information and ongoing research trials. There is also an online forum for dog owners dealing with the disease.

Huge progress has been made in the available treatment options for osteosarcoma. Because of the advances in veterinary oncology, life-saving protocols have been developed for the treatment of primary bone cancer in humans, especially children; another example of how dogs improve the lives of humans. But awareness and early detection are the keys to a better outcome. Bone Cancer Dogs, Inc President, Ana Cilursu, M.D., states: “Of the more than 10,000 cases diagnosed annually, 75% occur in the limbs, but bone cancer can also involve the spine, jaw, ribs, skull and other bones. It is largely a disease of middle-aged to older dogs, and is most prevalent in large and giant breeds. The biggest challenge is early diagnosis. Many older dogs present with a limp, and are diagnosed with a sprain or arthritis, only to find months later that the underlying problem is bone cancer. In some cases the pain improves with anti-inflammatory medicines, further delaying the diagnosis. In addition to providing information, resources and support, our mission is to educate all dog owners about the warning signs and raise funds to support further research.”

Bone Cancer Dogs, Inc is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 2008, dedicated to promoting awareness and supporting research of canine bone cancer.
