"Comfortable Norwegian cows are producing more milk and have less udder infections since new regulations allowing them to relax for up to half a day on soft rubberized mattresses were introduced.

In 2004, Norway introduced rules to replace gradually all sheds where cows are kept in stalls with ones that allow them to move more freely and lie down on a softer surface.

'They lie about half of the day, which is natural for them,' doctoral student Lars Erik Ruud told Reuters after researching the impact of the rules, the first of their kind in the world."

As an animal lover I applaud the government of Norway for taking measures to ensure that cows are treated humanely. I wish the American government would institute regulations to protect our livestock from the appalling conditions in which they are forced to live.

Human beings are similar to cows in the sense that we also need rest and relaxation in order to function physically and intellectually on a high level. The next time your wife calls you a lazy cow when you are taking a nap on the sofa, explain to her how comfy cows produce more milk.

Cows and guys like me who like to nap have been taking a bum rap for far too long. It's my penchant for taking naps that's responsible for these Pulitzer-worthy articles.
