THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10: MUSHROOMS

Profile America -- Thursday, September 10th. Some 100,000 people will be descending on Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, this weekend for the 24th annual Mushroom Festival. This is appropriate, because September is National Mushroom Month, and Kennett Square bills itself as the mushroom capital of the world. Activities include a soup cook-off, cooking and growing demonstrations, and farm tours, as well as entertainment, a parade, and a car show. Mushrooms are an important salad ingredient and add interest to many other meals. They are one of the few foods rich in vitamin D. More than 400,000 tons of mushrooms are grown each year in the U.S., with a value exceeding $900 million.
