Media Advisory: East Coast Bivalve Shellfish Harvesting Updates
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 4, 2009) - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will provide updated information daily over the upcoming weekend related to the recent prohibition notices for bivalve mollusks issued in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Recent closures of shellfish harvesting include oysters, clams, mussels and quahogs.
Following the closures, intensive water quality surveys were conducted, and Environment Canada (EC) found evidence of elevated coastal fecal coliform contamination in waters off Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick following last weekend's heavy rainfall event.
EC has completed water quality tests, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will continue to test meat quality. When acceptable Canadian standards for safety are met, a recommendation on re-opening will be made. This does not apply to areas that were already closed as of noon on August 30 or areas that have been closed due to reported failures of waste water treatment plants.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the closures issued on Sunday August 30 and Monday August 31st have been lifted for the following areas:
PEI Malpeque
PEI North Shore Gulf
PEI East
PEI West Northumberland
NS Southwest with exception of Annapolis Basin
NS Eastern Shore
Between 5:00pm and 8:00 pm EST daily starting Friday, September 4, 2009, updates on re-openings and closures will appear on the DFO Website at: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/index-eng.htm
