SAN DIEGO, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Fulfilling its promise of industry-leading performance at affordable price points, Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC), the world's largest company solely focused on data warehousing and enterprise analytics, announced today that the Teradata Purpose-Built Platform Family has achieved strong market momentum. Teradata attributes this to the platform mix, which addresses a wide range of analytical needs.

Introduced into the global marketplace just over a year ago, the platform family has experienced steady market uptake. Teradata now has more than 100 appliances in production, including the Data Mart Appliance 551, the Data Warehouse Appliance 2550, and the Extreme Data Appliance 1550, which complement the core platform, the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 5550. All platforms are powered by the latest Teradata Database, Teradata 13. This is Teradata's most significant and advanced release with 93 innovations, achieving an overall performance improvement of up to 30 percent. The combination of software and hardware platform performance and capability pays tangible dividends for Teradata customers by helping them to out-maneuver their competitors.

Customers cite many reasons for choosing Teradata appliances over competing vendors, including database technology, affordable pricing, industry consulting expertise, and value-enhancing tools that result in cost-effective economics. Customers are excited by Teradata's leading edge performance, dramatically improving the ability to handle complex queries. In one example, run time was cut from 24 hours to two minutes. These reasons - now embodied in the Teradata platform family, are a strong investment incentive for companies just starting out, looking to replace their existing data warehousing environment or expanding their current Teradata environments.

Teradata platforms are purpose built to meet a range of analytical needs for companies of every size. Yet Teradata continues to be the only company building active data warehouses for pervasive intelligence across an enterprise in the context of extremely demanding business and technology service levels - for operational as well as strategic requirements.

The Teradata Extreme Data Appliance 1550 was introduced in October and has also received a positive market response, winning orders from leading companies with specialized analytic requirements on extremely large volumes of data. The Extreme Data Appliance's low price point now makes it affordable for companies such as RealNetworks to analyze many of the new data sources that drive huge, growing volumes of detailed data and produce top-line business value. These sources include detailed web interaction data, sensor data, RFID data and phone call detail records.

At the top end, the Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse 5550 continues to attract new customers while winning new expansion orders from existing customers. eBay(TM) owns one of the world's largest Teradata enterprise data warehouses (EDW's) for real time interaction. Yet in addition to eBay, hundreds of other companies have expanded their existing enterprise data warehouses, including Barclays Bank, Carrefour, China Post, Korea Seven, METRO, Publix, Sabre, St. George Bank, Winn-Dixie, and many others.

Quotes

Randy Lea, vice president of products and services marketing, Teradata:

"In only a year, we and our customers are realizing a powerful positive business impact from our platform family strategy," said Randy Lea, vice president, Teradata products and services. "We've made Teradata-class intelligence affordable for every business - and the steady rate of deployment in every industry across the world underscores the success of our strategy. Appliance deployments alone cover the entire range of data marts, extreme data appliances, data warehouse appliances - and our core enterprise data warehousing (EDW) platforms continue to be deployed globally. New appliance customers, to name a few, include Australian Pharmaceutical Industries, Barclays Bank, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Limited Stores, RealNetworks, Sheetz, and Western Digital."

William McKnight, information management practice leader for US Analytics:

"Teradata is the only vendor in the industry with a family of appliances designed for different workloads and companies of all sizes," said McKnight. "Teradata is a recognized leader in supporting the largest, most complex customers in the world. Now customers of all sizes can leverage the power and experience of Teradata with a platform that meets their needs at an affordable price."

Alex Grigorian, vice president, enterprise technology, Intercontinental Hotels Group

"There's nothing entry-level about the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance we have deployed -- it handles enormous workloads with speed, elegance and performance beyond our expectations. The Data Warehouse Appliance 2550 provides the analytical power to take us where we need to be."

Western Digital:

"Our new Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance is handling greater data volume than our previous system, with increased query response time," said Ross Gough, director, data analysis management, Western Digital. "At a time when our data volume is growing by the terabyte, we have seen queries that once took 24 hours now run in as few as two minutes."

Oliver Ratzesberger Senior Director, Architecture and Operations, eBay Inc

"Because the main data is already in the Teradata Active EDW, we can offer prototyping environments at no cost to business units. This helps eBay keep our competitive edge."

Additional comments from Randy Lea, Teradata:

"Teradata's affordability tends to surprise companies who are misinformed by competing vendors," said Lea. "Competitor scare tactics often mislead unwary IT buyers, telling them that Teradata systems cost as much as a million dollars a terabyte - a ridiculous line. The fact is, our platform family list pricing starts at $16,500 per terabyte - lower than other vendors -- for Teradata-class systems that dramatically outperform limited-purpose database boxes."

"Teradata has marquee-named customers that have declined 'virtually free' data warehouse appliance offers from well-known data appliance vendors desperate for a deal," said Lea. "There is simply nothing, nothing at all on the market that is 'like Teradata' despite the claims and hype from other vendors. There is a reason everybody out there compares themselves to us in their marketing claims. However, a company of any size that is serious about complex data warehousing and scalable growth wants experience, not an experiment."

"Our Teradata Active Enterprise Data Warehouse has been recognized as the leading system for years, but as a single platform company we were primarily focused on larger customers who have adopted EDW architecture," said Lea. "With our platform family we can address any data warehouse architecture whether it's a data mart, hub and spoke, specialized appliance or our advocated EDW -- all at an affordable price.
