Srinagar, Aug 26: A cleric and a devotee were injured when suspected militants fired on them inside a mosque in South Kashmir yesterday evening.

A senior police officer said that the militants fired from point blank range towards the cleric of a mosque Molvi Bashir and a devotee Abdul Rehman Wachkoo, 45, at Bon Mohalla, Shopian, some 57 kms south from the summer capital Srinagar on Tuesday evening.

"They were offering evening (Isha) prayers when the firing incident took place. Both received bullet injuries and were taken to the local hospital, where from critically injured Rehman was shifted to Kashmir's leading hospital, where doctors are attending to him. They have termed his condition as life threatening," he said.

After the shoot-out, police and para-military personnel laid siege around the area. However, no arrests were reported.
