History of Shade Sails

The ancient Romans, and Greeks have both recorded using large fabric canopies for the same purpose. Roman sailors, for example, created an ingenious system to shade the Roman Coliseum using their knowledge of sail making for boats. The rudimentary methods they used resulted in large retractable canvas sails being pulled tight, high in the air, which provided effective shading for roughly 50,000 Coliseum occupants. On a smaller scale the Greeks used surplus boat sails to temporarily rig shading on the battlefields during the 12th century crusades.

Shade Sails Today

Shade sails and shade canopies have come a long way since the middle ages. In recent years technological advances in plastic textiles have produced materials engineered to last in extreme weather conditions. Today shade sails are primarily manufactured with a high-density polyethylene mesh that achieves longer spans, more functional shade, and artistic and dynamic forms while maintaining UV colorfast properties and flame resistance.
