Srinagar, Aug 20: Two militants were killed in fresh gunfights in North Kashmir on Thursday.

A senior police official said that the Indian army soldiers on specific information about the presence of militants laid siege around the dense forests in the Bungus Valley in North Kashmir. "While the searches were going on, the militants hiding in the area opened fire from automatic weapons towards the soldiers. The fire was returned by the soldiers, triggering an encounter. In the ensuing gunfight, which was going on a militant was killed," he said.

The official said that the identify of the slain militant and the outfit to which they owe allegiance could not be known.

In another gunfight in North Kashmir's Chatrakoot, Kalaroos area, an unidentified militant was killed. "The combing operation in the area is going on," he said.

The North Kashmir has witnessed several fierce gunfights between militants and soldiers in the recent past. At least a dozen militant and a couple of soldiers have been killed in the gunfights.
