SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis and her husband, actor Louis Zorich, have shared their diabetes stories to help increase awareness, announced EmpowHer (www.empowher.com), the home of women's health online. Type 2 diabetes is a disorder in which the body is resistant to high levels of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the body convert food into energy. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) from the food one eats cannot enter cells. Compounding the problem, 7 out of 10 U.S. adults, age 65 and older, have diabetes or pre-diabetes, and less than 10 percent of older adults on Medicare take advantage of the free diabetes screening benefits available to them.

"Olympia Dukakis and Louis Zorich are powerful diabetes advocates," said EmpowHer Founder and Chairman, Michelle King Robson. "By sharing their stories on EmpowHer, they are helping others take precaution, lower risks and advocate for one other. It is an honor to help spread their message."
