After Mr. Zorich was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the couple began educating themselves and others on the changes they were making to fight the disease.

Type 2 diabetes is a disorder in which the body is resistant to high levels of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps the body convert food into energy. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) from the food one eats cannot enter cells. Compounding the problem, 7 out of 10 U.S. adults, age 65 and older, have diabetes or pre-diabetes, and less than 10 percent of older adults on Medicare take advantage of the free diabetes screening benefits available to them.
