College Intern Lives in Skilled Nursing Center, Apple Rehab, for Two Weeks
PLAINVILLE, Conn., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- 22-year-old University of Connecticut student Benjamin Schiano has much to say after his two-week stay in Apple Rehab Farmington Valley, a 130 bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation center. "What an experience! When you think of nursing homes you don't usually think of high-end amenities, but that's what I discovered. I had a private room with WiFi and a flat screen TV and a refrigerator stocked with all my favorite snacks. This is way better than my college dorm room," he said.
Ben, who has almost finished his graduate work, will take his certification exam to become a licensed nursing home administrator in September. Offhandedly, he proposed to his supervisor while interning at Apple Health Care that he'd like to move into their Apple Rehab Farmington Valley facility. He wanted this first-hand experience to help maximize his education and find out what worked and what didn't.
Ben made friends with many of the patients and nurses while he lived at Apple Rehab Farmington Valley even celebrating his birthday during his stay. "I have to admit, I thought I would be bored and a little depressed but there was so much to do and the amenities were nicer than most hotels. I gathered information that will be valuable to me in my career. I feel I have learned more than any of my fellow students. What better way to know something than to live it?" he said.
