Protests Spread Across Kashmir, Police Gypsy Set Ablaze
By Fayaz Wani
Srinagar, July 2: The protests against the rape and murder of two women and the killing of four protestors in police firing spread across Kashmir with a group of youth setting afire a police gypsy.
People in South Kashmir's Pulwama township staged anti-India and pro-freedom demonstrations. Raising pro-freedom and anti-police slogans, the protestors were demanding action against the police men involved in killing of four youth in North Kashmir and rape and murder of two women in Shopian.
As the protests were going on, a police vehicle passed through the area. The protestors pelted stones on the vehicles and the driver of the vehicle lost control over it and hit two passersby. This infuriated the protestors, who set afire the police vehicle.
Later, additional police and paramilitary personnel were rushed to the area and they fired tear smoke shells and rubber bullets towards the protestors. At least four persons were injured in the action. They were hospitalised.
Meanwhile, the violent clashes continued for the 4th day in succession in North Kashmir on Thursday. At least 12 persons were injured in the clashes. One of the teenager was hit by a rubber bullet in the abdomen and has been hospitalised.
The residents at several areas alleged that the policemen barged into residential houses and ransacked the household goods. "They also smashed the window and glasspanes of several houses and parked vehicles," they said.
