Dr. Dan Lebovitz of Ohio Receives Leadership Award

MCLEAN, Va. , July 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday June 18th, 2009, the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) recognized Dr. Dan Lebovitz by presenting him with the 2009 Excellence in Leadership Award. The AOPO award was supported by the Nathan Sallop Insurance Agency. The national award is presented to an individual who demonstrates leadership through outstanding achievements in the organ procurement field.

Dr. Dan Lebovitz has been actively involved in the organ and tissue donation and transplantation community for almost two decades. Throughout this time, he has held many leadership roles including serving both on the Board of Directors of two OPOs and as the Medical Director of two OPOs. Dr. Lebovitz was honored for being actively involved in all organ donor cases, developing donor management protocols and providing oversight on donor management issues. He attends weekly case reviews and provides leadership by preparing educational lectures for the procurement staff.

Dr. Lebovitz has made significant contributions to LifeBanc. His work on the Strategic Planning Committee resulted in the formation of a community based board. Dr. Lebovitz spearheaded the CEO Search Committee and aided LifeBanc in the creation of their DCD donor program. He assisted LifeBanc and the local transplant centers during their conversions to electronic organ allocations and in the same year, was elected Medical Advisor for AOPO. In 2008, Dr. Lebovitz continued to serve as a leader in the field by performing the first face transplant inthe United States.

Dr. Lebovitz earned his undergraduate degree at Washington University inSt. Louis. He graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1986. Subsequently, he completed his pediatric residency and pediatric critical care fellowship at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital inCleveland, Ohio. He is currently serving in his second year as Chairman of the Board of LifeBanc.
