Stop & Shop Announces Ground Beef Recall
QUINCY, Mass., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is recalling certain store made ground beef as part of the recent national voluntarily product recall by the JBS Swift Company because the product has the potential to be contaminated with Escherichia coli 0157:H7 bacteria (E. coli).
The products include:
75% Lean Ground Beef - UPC 200084852
75% Lean Ground Beef Big Buy - UPC 200084851
75% Lean Ground Beef Jumbo - UPC 200084855
80% Lean Ground Beef - UPC 200087291
80% Lean Ground Beef Big Buy - UPC 200087289
No other Stop & Shop ground beef products are involved. This product was sold only at Stop & Shop stores located in the states of ME, MA, RI, CT, and NH with sell by dates between April 29-June 6, 2009.
Stop & Shop has received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. E. coli causes a diarrhea illness often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
Stop & Shop customers who purchased this product should check their freezers and return unused portions to any Stop & Shop store for a full refund. Customers with questions about the recalled product may phone Customer Service at 1-800-767-7772 (M-F 9am- 5pm).
