Cause of The 3-4% e-Verify Mismatch Error Rate
My industry is offering e-Verify to companies who want to get government contracts. The third-party verification method assists companies in keeping them off the hook.
A second function of our compny is payroll service. It is true that there is about a 3-4% error rate with IRS/SSA mismatches.
Our research discovered the primary cause of the SSA's errors:
About 10 years ago the SSA got sloppy entering last names from Legal Permanent Resident and Work Authorization cards issued by INS [now USCIS}.
95% of those errors can be quickly and easily corrected by having the IRS send a Mismatch Letter to all W-2 and 1099 employees and independent contractors. Within two years, 95% of the mismatches can be caught and corrected by having the letter recipients walk into an SSA office and correct the problem in person on the spot.
Let's stop making phony excuses for not implementing e-Verify by having the IRS also send the W-2 and 1099 employers a copy of the mismatch letter instructing employers to correct the mismatch or the wages to mismatched employees will be disallowed on their tax returns.
Put Muscle Into Enforcement!
