Letter to the Editor
Crop Circles are Made By Extraterrestrials?
I've just read your piece on crop circles, and I invite you, as a fellow journalist, to devote some time to researching the phenomenon before reporting on it again.
<< There is zero evidence to support the theory that crop circles are made by extraterrestrials, >>
Does this mean you've studied the entire history of the phenomenon, the related scientific, technical and biological studies, the photography, the videos, the chemical tests, the electromagnetic measurements, the microscopic examinations and so forth - not to mention the testimony of many perfectly sane witnesses including members of the UK Armed Forces and the BBC - and can say with certainty that when all is said and done there is "no evidence" of anything other than "frat boys" and "wallabies" at work? After all, "there is zero evidence" is neither a scientific statement nor a proper journalistic one - all one can say is, "I have seen no such evidence myself, but then I have not studied the field."
<< we have the confession of hoaxers >>
Some people have confessed, and some of those confessions are true. But hoaxed circles, no matter how complex in their design, bear only a superficial resemblance to genuine ones in a number of respects. Anyone who has taken the time to bone up on the literature understands the vast and significant differences between the two and in most cases can tell in a moment which is which. For example, a huge, complex crop circle with its stalks bent by high heat at the lower nodes (thus remaining unbroken), woven and braided several layers deep and emitting residual electromagnetic energy, is highly unlikely to have been produced by frat boys with too much time on their hands, a couple of old geezers from the local pub, a clan of mischievous artists or (as one uninformed skeptic has theorized) "hedgehogs in heat."
Thanks for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
