Indian Soldier Arrested for Eve-Teasing in Kashmir

By Fayaz Wani

Srinagar, June 25: An Indian paramilitary soldier was arrested for eve-teasing in the restive Kashmir on Friday.

Residents of Soura in outskirts of Srinagar alleged that an Indian paramilitary soldier in civvies passes lewd remarks towards a young girl in the area. "The girl raised hue and cry. Upon hearing her cries, the residents of the area rushed towards her. She told them that soldier passed lewd remarks and tried to molest her," the locals said.

This infuriated the residents, who chased the accused. "The youth managed to catch hold of the accused person. On his frisking an identity card of paramilitary was recovered from his possession. He was later handed over to the police. When it came public that he was a paramilitary soldier, people in large numbers came out of their homes," the locals said.

Raising pro-freedom, anti-India and anti-CRPF slogans, the protestors were demanding stern action against the soldier. They later clashed with police and paramilitary personnel, who fired tear smoke shells and resorted to heavy baton charge. At least half a dozen persons were injured in the police action.

Meanwhile, complete shutdown was observed in Kashmir to protest against the continued arrest of the senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani and other separatist leaders. The authorities also enforced undeclared curfew in some parts of the summer capital to prevent people from marching towards Cheshmashahi, the place where the senior separatist leader has been detained.
