Hack-and-Patch Dispatch Number 327 from Cyber Secure Institute: Pro-Iranian Dictator Hackers Exploit Oregon University System to Attack Obama
WASHINGTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Today, Rob Housman, Executive Director of the Cyber Secure Institute, a
research and advocacy firm, released this statement:
"Pro-Iranian hackers exploited weaknesses in the Oregon University
Systems IT to protest the Obama Administration's statements concerning
the elections in Iran. The hackers posted an anti-Obama message and also
used the Oregon system to send an anti-Obama message to the Associated
Press and others.
"This hack was, for the most part, merely embarrassing. However, look
deeper and you see the real risks. We are in a low-level conflict across
cyberspace with a range of adversaries. Consider the damage that the
Iranian attackers could have wrought if they had used the multitude of
computers on the Oregon system not to send obnoxious notes but to attack
American cyber infrastructure. Then consider the damage possible if the
attackers weren't less sophisticated Iranian protestors but the Chinese
military's cyber-special-forces or the legions of Russian
cyber-irregulars. This is the real and serious risk that is inherent in
our inherently insecure IT.
"What is most disturbing is that these types of attacks are entirely
preventable. There are now inherently secure cyber-technologies, such as
those offered by our certified companies, INTEGRITY and TENIX, which
have been tested and certified by the NSA and NIAP as capable of
withstanding these types of attacks."
