City of Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Gehrels to Address Same-Sex Marriage with Kenji Yoshino, NYU, Boris Dittrich, Human Rights Watch & Ron Zacchi, Marriage Equality New York, on Friday, June 26

NEW YORK , June 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The City of Amsterdam is sending Deputy Mayor Carolien Gehrels to New York as part of its NY400 initiative to issue a statement in support of equality and tolerance for the LGBT community. In keeping with the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the start of the gay rights movement, the City of Amsterdam supports the New York legislation granting equality to LGBT citizens. The cities of Amsterdam and New York share a rich heritage of tolerance and creativity.

This statement will be issued at a press conference at Jurrow Hall at New York University, Friday, June 26th at 1 PM EST. The location is 100 Washington Square East, between Washington & Waverly, entrance onWaverly. Media is welcome to attend, cover the remarks and engage in a brief Q & A with the speakers. Joining the Deputy Major, the first time a foreign government has spoken to same-sex marriage equality and tolerance inthe United States, are Dr. Boris Dittrich, Advocacy Director for LGBT Issues, Human Rights Watch, Ron Zacchi, Executive Director of Marriage Equality New York, and Professor Kenji Yoshino, NYU School of Law.

The event is hosted by OUTLaw, the NYU Law School's LGBT organization, with the College of Arts and Science Advising Office, Office of LGBT Student Services, the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs and Office of the Assistant Vice-President for Student Diversity.

Deputy Mayor Carolien Gehrels is an openly gay, married, mother of one, and is proud to join her colleagues supporting this important civil rights issue. Elected in 2006, Mrs. Gehrels is a member of the college of Aldermen, one of the six Aldermen who administer the City with Mayor Cohen. TheCity of Amsterdam legalized same-sex marriage in 2001 and feels it is a strong thread in the fabric of any great metropolis.

Amsterdam is participating in New York's Pride with the I do. I amsterdam campaign, comprising a press event hosted by NYU, a float in the Pride march and a cocktail reception at The Standard,New York.Amsterdam will also bring 5 LGBT couples to the city to be wed by Mayor Cohen during Amsterdam's Pride in August.

Other stops on Mrs. Gehrels' tour include: participating in NYC Global Partners International Summit on Job Creation and the Workforce; meeting with relevant policy and opinion makers; and hosting the PICNIC Salon NY, an invitation-only gathering of world-class creatives, brand innovators, thought-leaders and city officials from bothAmsterdam andNew York.
