North Dakota Industrial Employment Declines 2.7% According to Manufacturers Directory

EVANSTON, Ill. , June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in North Dakota fell 2.7% over the past twelve months according to the 2010 North Dakota Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports North Dakota lost 1,017 industrial jobs between April 2008 and April 2009, the first time MNI has ever reported a significant loss for the state.

Manufacturers' News reportsNorth Dakota is home to 1,233 manufacturers employing 37,215 workers. MNI surveys manufacturers of all sizes including small start-ups with just a few employees.

According to earlier reports by MNI,North Dakota saw industrial employment increase 2.5% between 2005 and 2006. Manufacturing jobs held steady over the 2006-2007 survey period, and increased 3.2% between 2007 and 2008.

"As with the entire nation, the recession continues to chip away at North Dakota's core sectors," says Tom Dubin, President of theEvanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "However, North Dakota's natural resources and favorable business climate are helping the state weather the storm. The 2.7% loss is marginal compared to the near double digit losses seen in many other states."

Bright spots include Vera Sun's opening of an ethanol plant inHankinson, the expansion of an existing ethanol facility, Northern Grain Equipment, and the expansion of WCCO Belting's rubber conveyor belting facility inWahpeton.

MNI reports industrial machinery and equipment ranks as the state's top industrial sector, currently accounting for 7,036 jobs, down 6.7%, and is expected to worsen with the recent announcement of layoffs at Fargo's CNH plant. Second-ranked food products manufacturing accounts for 5,851 jobs, with no significant change reported over the survey year. Fabricated metal products ranks third in the state with 3,533, with virtually no change over the past twelve months.

MNI reports employment in the chemicals sector rose 2.6%, and no significant losses were reported for furniture/fixtures, paper products, printing/publishing and rubber/plastics. Losses were seen in lumber/wood down 18.4%; textiles/apparel down 14%; electronics down 10.3%; stone/clay/glass down 7.5% and transportation equipment down 1.4%.

Manufacturers' News reports North Dakota's eastern half accounts for a majority of the state's industrial employment decline, with the Northeast losing 7.7% and the Southeast region losing 3%. According to MNI, the Southeast is home to 22,253 industrial jobs while the Northeast accounts for 5,849. On the other hand, the Northwest region saw a 1.8% increase in manufacturing jobs and currently accounts for 4,288 jobs. Industrial employment in the Southwest rose 1.6% over the year and is home to 4,825 industrial workers, according to MNI.

MNI's city data showsFargo accounts for a quarter of the state's industrial employment with 9,396 jobs, down 2.9% over the year. Second-ranked Bismark accounts for 3,281 jobs, with employment virtually unchanged over the past twelve months. Employment declined 8.5% in third-rankedGrand Forks, with the city currently home to 2,629 workers, whileWest Fargo saw employment drop 10%, and is currently home to 1,932 jobs.Jamestown accounts for 1,688 industrial jobs, with no significant change reported over the year.
