Can You Win the Game With Perfect Pitching?
By Joel Block
In the heat of baseball season, I cannot help but derive a few metaphors from my favorite sport.
It is said that in baseball pitching is 75 to 90 percent of the game. Pitching is defensive, but you cannot win a baseball game with 90 percent excellence in pitching. You also have to have good offense because offense is what puts runs on the board and dollars in the bank. And consequently, it is the focus on the offense that Growth-Logic uses to drive its strategies. This is not to diminish the importance of a defense or operational administrative posture, but it is our orientation to focus on the business, and not just on its operation and efficiency.
In baseball, pitching prevents a team from losing a game, but it does not cause the team to win. It can contribute to a win, but it does not cause the win. Wins are caused by more runs than the other team scores, so, in the end, runs are what caused the win. But good pitching is required to keep the other team at bay.
Similarly, in business and in sales versus operations, good pitching will prevent money from leaking out of the company, but strong batting or sales is what is required to keep the team in the running, so that it can go the distance.
In baseball, the first few successes of the game are called a rally. A long or continuous rally is called momentum. Where are you with your business?
Keep careful attention on your operations and all of your administrative activities - but remember that you can only win the game with a strong offense. If your sales are not where they should be, call us. We can help you to knock one out of the park.
