WASHINGTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Chouchou Namegabe Nabintu, a 31-year-old journalist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), will bring information on how rape is being used as a war strategy in the DRC to a joint hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs and the new Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy and Global Women's Issues on May 13, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. The subcommittees are chaired by Senator Russ Feingold and Senator Barbara Boxer.

Nabintu and 40 fellow women professionals of her South Kivu's Association of Women's Journalists (AFEM) are risking their lives, using the medium of radio to combat the violence and give Congolese women a voice against the terror.

Nabintu has also brought the crises of Congolese women to an international stage, recently traveling to The Hague to plead the case of Kivu's women at the International Court of Justice. Most recently, Nabintu traveled to Washington in March, 2009, when she received the Vital Voices Global Leadership Award for using her broadcast journalism skills to thwart government corruption and injustices against women in her country.

"Breaking the silence is just the beginning. What we need now is actions," said Nabintu while accepting the Vital Voices Global Leadership Award. "We need to teach women to stand up and use their voice."

Vital Voices is the leading non-governmental organizations (NGO) that identifies, trains, mentors, and empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the globe, enabling them to transform lives and accelerate peace and prosperity in their communities.

Media Notes: Chouchou Namegabe Nabintu will be available for interviews Tuesday, May 12 through Thursday, May 14. To schedule an interview, please contact Caroline DeHaan at 202.414.0791 or cdehaan@susandavis.com.
