Chouchou Namegabe Nabintu to Address U.S. Senate Committee on Rape and Violence Against Women in Democratic Republic of the Congo
WASHINGTON - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Chouchou
Namegabe Nabintu, a 31-year-old journalist from the Democratic
Republic of the Congo (DRC), will bring information on how rape is being
used as a war strategy in the DRC to a joint hearing of the Senate
Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs and the new
Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human
Rights, Democracy and Global Women's Issues on May 13, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.
The subcommittees are chaired by Senator Russ Feingold and Senator
Barbara Boxer.
Nabintu and 40 fellow women professionals of her South Kivu's
Association of Women's Journalists (AFEM) are risking their lives, using
the medium of radio to combat the violence and give Congolese women a
voice against the terror.
Nabintu has also brought the crises of Congolese women to an
international stage, recently traveling to The Hague to plead the case
of Kivu's women at the International Court of Justice. Most recently,
Nabintu traveled to Washington in March, 2009, when she received the Vital
Voices Global Leadership Award for using her broadcast journalism
skills to thwart government corruption and injustices against women in
her country.
"Breaking the silence is just the beginning. What we need now is
actions," said Nabintu while accepting the Vital Voices Global
Leadership Award. "We need to teach women to stand up and use their
voice."
