Local Schools from Maine to Florida Receive a Library Week Surprise

CHERRY HILL, N.J. andPORTLAND, Maine, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank(R), and TD Banknorth celebrated National Library Week this past April with half-a-million dollars in donations to school libraries fromMaine toFlorida.

From April 13 through 30, bank executives surprised a hundred libraries with a $5,000 donation each from the TD Charitable Foundation. Many also read to students one of two financially savvy books: Sam and the Lucky Money by Karen Chinn and Willie Wins by Almira Astudillo Gilles.

The celebration of National Library Week served as the official kick off to the Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program encourages young people to read and additionally provides a goal for them to learn the importance of saving and money. TD Bank and TD Banknorth contribute $10 into a new or existing young savers account for each child who reads 10 books throughout the summer. The 2009 Summer Reading Program will run from May 4 through September 30.

"The Summer Reading Program was created to promote the value of reading on a regular basis," said Fred Graziano, Regional Banking President, TD Bank. "It is a two-pronged educational commitment - it not only encourages young people to read, but it also provides a goal for them to learn the importance of saving money."

    --  Read the story with your child
    --  Encourage your child to say familiar words and phrases out loud
    --  Practice sounding out words your child may have difficulty reading
    --  Provide the word your child is struggling with so that he/she
        doesn't become frustrated and lose the enjoyment of the experience
    --  Repeat reading the story, asking your child what he or she enjoys most
        about the story and its characters
    --  HAVE FUN!
