New breakthroughs in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients to be presented by Dr. An Nguyen, a researcher with ClinicAid Research Management and a medical oncologist at Compassionate Cancer Care

Cancer patients generally rank nausea and vomiting as one of the most disturbing side effects of cancer therapy. About 70% to 80% of people who receive chemotherapy experience nause and vomiting from their chemotherapy and as many as 50% of cancer patients will refuse or delay their chemotherapy because of fears about the intensity and duration of nausea and vomiting caused by many current chemotherapies. In the past, chemotherapy- induced nausea and vomiting was an unfortunate and poorly managed consequence of cancer treatment, but emerging treatments are improving outcomes and reducing the incidence of nausea and vomiting for cancer patients.
Earlier this year, Dr. An Nguyen, a researcher with ClinicAid Research Management and a medical oncologist at Compassionate Cancer Care, was acknowledged for his success in treating chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients on a global clinical trial. The clinical trial, conducted in Poland, India, and the United States included 120 participating centers and physicians. Dr. Nguyen was among the top 10 physicians treating patients for nausea and vomiting. For his achievements in treating patients on this clinical trial, Dr. Nguyen will be included in a publication with several other leading oncologists that will be presented at the annual meeting of the Association of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Orlando Florida, from May 29 - June 2, 2009.
In honor of his achievement in treating nausea and vomiting in cancer patients, Dr. Nguyen also received a Distinguished Achievement award presented by the Chief Executive Officer of ClinicAid Research Management Dr. Dwight Tapp. "Clinical trials offer an important alternative in the management of cancer diseases," said Dr. Nguyen. "Most current therapies only provide marginal benefits to patients, and the opportunity to engage in clinical research expands the scope of treatment possibilities in hopes of delaying the progression of the disease or of maximizing the quality of life for cancer patients. In this particular clinical trial, an otherwise debilitating side effect of chemotherapy was effectively managed leading to greater quality of life outcomes for our patients. Our partnership with ClinicAid Research has augmented our disease management practices through clinical trials, enhanced the level of professional service we provide, and offers greater hope to patients when seeking the best possible treatment options available in cancer medicine today."
Breakthroughs in managing nausea and vomiting for patients remain an important component of cancer treatment management. Alternative therapies developed through clinical trials offer renewed hope for better curative and supportive measures in treating cancer diseases.
