UT Austin Students Start Tech Company in 3 Days

AUSTIN, Texas , March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Bridging the disciplines of computer science, law, and business, 40 entrepreneurs in Austin, Texas will start a technology company-in three days.

The event is called 3 Day Startup. The diverse participants take a startup from initial concept to launched prototype, all over the course of one weekend.

"We bring in all the resources required to create a new venture and have our participants pitch their ideas. The best one is picked, and 40 passionate entrepreneurs immediately jump on it and make it happen," Thomas Finsterbusch, 3 Day Startup organizer and 2nd year Computer Science PhD student at The University of Texas at Austin, said during an interview at his office on March 1, 2009.

3 Day Startup begins April 3rd, 2009 and runs through April 5th at the Austin Technology Incubator, in the MCC building located at 3925 West Braker Lane,Austin Texas 78759. Friday, April 3rd, the participants meet each other and begin to brainstorm ideas for new tech companies. On Saturday, they plan business strategies, do market research, iron out legal issues, and write code for a prototype of the new company. On Sunday, the group will pitch their plan to a panel of judges consisting of venture capitalists, angel investors, and local entrepreneurs, who will provide candid feedback on how the startup can become more successful.

This is the second year the event will be held. Nik Daftary, CEO of turn2live.com, the company launched last year, said, "It was the epitome of everything that I had hoped for in the MBA program at McCombs. It was really cool to see that it was coming out of the Computer Science department." Turn2live.com showcased its official launch at SXSW 2009 with the Austin Digital Media Council at the Austin Interactive Showcase inAustin, Texas.

3 Day Startup is being hosted by the student organizations Campus Entrepreneurship Opportunities in addition to the National Science Foundation, the Chair of Free Enterprise, The University of Texas at Austin Computer Science Department, School of Law, McCombs School of Business, and the Idea to Product Competition.

It is sponsored by Amazon Web Services, Capital Factory, Alsop Louie Partners, Indeed.com, NetQoS, Quatro Consulting, Glaceau, Einstein Bros, and Sweet Leaf Tea. 3 Day Startup interviewed candidates from multiple disciplines, including MBAs, Computer Science, Engineering, and Graphic Design for the 2009 event.

Industry veterans will attend the weekend as mentors to provide input on the startup's progress.
