The Worst Screen Couple
Mary's Valentine's Top 10 Most Mismatched Movie Couples
When I first saw this, it was just a straight listing, and I ignored it, because really what the f*** am I gonna say.....yeah 100% correct? But then I got the list via another blog....
Nikki Blonsky & Zac Efron (HAIRSPRAY) Nothing could ever top the raunchy genius of John Waters' original "Hairspray" starring Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad- but this version casting the young heartthrob Zac Efron of Nikki Blonsky's affections makes for a rather a typical duo that don't quite cut it in the realms of on-screen romance.
Who's with me?
Anyone else see the '88 film?......The Link/Tracy connection is completely different in the '07 version, and not nearly true enough, and thus they are unbelievable as a couple.
In fact, this blurb got me thinking how "valid" the argument is against Tracy/Link, and why this romantic pairing is most definitely lacking in the chemistry department.
In Waters' original film Link was nearly as much a misfit as Tracy. Yeah, he could sing, but no one liked him, and he was an outsider looking for a different kind of acceptance. More like 'rebel without a cause.' These kids liked stirring the pot just to see what kind of reaction it would cause.
This entire aspect of Tracy and Link's 'turning on' to the struggle for civil rights is much more believable. It was all part of their sexual awakening, and none of that is evident in the '07 film Shankman's/Zac's Link isn't dangerous enough, and Nikki's Tracy doesn't scheme for Link the way her predecessor did. So the whole "gorgeous heartthrob" falling for the unpopular chick just doesn't work the same way.
Anyone else remember how many scenes there were of Tracy and Link smoking and making out in alley ways?
