Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Announces Dramatic 2009-2010 Season

"Legends" features icons of the Classical and Pops music genres

DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Offering a wide and varied range of musical programming, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra's 2009-2010 Legends Season will run from September, 2009 through May, 2010. It will consist of five distinct concert Series and six Special Events totaling 33 programs for a total of 52 separate concerts. "We built our Classical and Classical Connections series on a foundation of highly influential works by romantic music's most legendary composers, including Beethoven, Berlioz, Schumann, and Wagner," states DPO Music Director Neal Gittleman. "Particularly exciting, the Orchestra will perform two world premieres in the Legends Season: Lowell Liebermann's Clarinet Concerto and Songs of Rumi by local composer Jeff Olmsted."

The Miami Valley & Good Samaritan Hospitals Classical Series spotlights the Romantic Age of music, which ushered in the notion of the primacy of the individual artistic voice. The National City SuperPops Series features the legendary music of Jane Monheit, Benny Goodman, and George Gershwin, among others. The Classical Connections Series uses a unique concert-plus-discussion format to explore the lives and styles of Tchaikovsky, Franck, Wagner, Schumann, and Strauss. The Dayton Power & Light Family Series includes DPO's famous PhilharMonster Halloween concert and innovative groups, such as the Madcap Puppet Theatre. The Demirjian Chamber Explorations Series draws on some of the most personal, intimate facets of featured composers in a wide mix of chamber settings. Special Events feature the music of ABBA,Woodstock, and a Lincoln Centennial concert. The season is on-sale to current and new subscribers now.

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is the largest and oldest performing arts organization in theDayton community. DPO performances are made possible in part by Culture Works, the single largest source of community funds for the arts and culture in the area. The DPO receives partial funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and from the Ohio Arts Council. Funding from the Ohio Arts Council is an investment of state tax dollars that promotes economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for allOhio residents.
