The Road to Washington: Small Town America Speaks
Freelance reporter and videographer Philip Ireland left San Diego last Monday bound for next Tuesday's inauguration. Along the way he's stopping in small-town diners across the country interviewing America's heroes --- waitresses, mechanics, business owners, servicemen --- on what they're thinking about the state of the nation and Obama's culture-shaking presidency.
Each day he's asking questions around a different theme: Monday was "hope" in Escondido, CA; Tuesday was "change" in Willcox, AZ; Wednesday was "unity" Merkel, TX; Thursday was "courage" in Gurden, AR. He moves on Friday toward Nashville looking for another small town, another opinion and another simple American story. Race and Tolerance will be the subject. Saturday he'll ask about our place in the global world; Sunday he will arrive in D.C. with small-town stories of empathy and forgiveness.
