Dreyer's Shifts Production to East and West Coast Plants

HOUSTON, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream, Inc. announced today that it will stop production at itsHouston, Texas, manufacturing facility by the beginning of April 2009, and shift production to four of its other plants inBakersfield andTulare, California;Laurel, Maryland; andFort Wayne, Indiana.

The closure will impact 168 employees in manufacturing and distribution in Houston. Another 115 sales, distribution and corporate support employees will remain inHouston after the plant closes.

In addition to theHouston facility, Dreyer's has two plants -- one in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and another inLaurel, Maryland -- that handle East Coast production, and three ice cream manufacturing plants in the West -- in Bakersfield, California;Tulare, California; andSalt Lake City, Utah -- for a current total of six ice cream plants across the country. TheLaurel and Bakersfield ice cream facilities are two of the world's largest.

Dreyer'sHouston plant produces ice cream in family-size cartons for home sale as well as larger foodservice containers for restaurants and parlors.

Dreyer's, which is headquartered inOakland, California, where it was founded in 1928, has more than 7,000 employees across the country.
