Edens & Avant: Recreating Trenholm Plaza
COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Who says you can't turn back time?
When Trenholm Plaza opened almost 50 years ago, shopping centers were well
worn threads in the fabric of American culture. Neighbors talked business over
coffee at the drugstore counter, daily trips to the grocery store yielded
personal bonds between butchers and shoppers, and residents looked upon these
retail hubs with a definitive sense of ownership.
Today, a redeveloped Trenholm Plaza evokes that same community feel. Edens
& Avant began the redevelopment last summer with a vision to create a
pedestrian-friendly, personalized environment that draws people in and returns
the busy center to a place for the community that reflects the people who make
up the community. From the new retailers to the elegant resting spots, the
changes incorporate that vision.
"We had in mind a redevelopment that would return Trenholm Plaza to a
central point of interaction and enjoyment for the neighborhood - something
more than just a shopping destination," commented Lyle Darnall, VP-Development
for Edens & Avant. "Shopping areas also should be places to get together with
friends and family, whether that's dining outdoors, relaxing in the open
areas, or meeting for a glass of wine."
Details of the redevelopment include new retailers such as Rosso Trattoria
Italia, SOAK nail spa and Urban Nirvana Hair Salon, which appeal to the
sophisticated customers in the area and compliment the high-quality retailers
already at the center. New walkways, teak benches and lighting create a
comfortable ambiance while a redesigned parking area and evening valet parking
for restaurant goers provide added convenience. Approximately 90 new trees,
large planters filled with seasonal flowers and a water feature contribute to
the inviting atmosphere.
Mahogany, custom-made store fronts, a trellis leading to improved parking
behind the center, and a 26-foot tall "green screen" are the focal points of
the renovations. The trellis and screen soon will be covered with Confederate
Jasmine, a flowering vine native toSouth Carolina.
"For the redevelopment, it was important to Edens & Avant to incorporate
the unique artistry and excellent craftsmanship found inSouth Carolina. From
many of the contractors to theCharleston light fixtures to the tree
selection, the finished product is representative of the great resources we
have in this state," continued Darnall.
Phase I introduces some new retailers to the market, while several popular
tenants have relocated within the center. Highly anticipated Rosso offers
foodies a cozy atmosphere and creative dishes by local restaurateur Kristian
Niemi. SOAK, a nail spa unlike anything in the market, brings relaxing
manicures and pedicures, with meticulous attention placed on customer service
and sterilizing techniques. Award-winning Urban Nirvana is expanding by
opening Urban Nirvana Hair Salon.
Folline Vision Centers, The UPS Store and Hooligan's are relocating to the
larger building as part of the development. Phase II, scheduled to be complete
in late 2009, will entail a complete overhaul of the smaller L-shaped building
and will feature a unique retail mix.
