NEC Magnus and Ikanos Communications Collaborate to Deliver World's Largest VDSL Deployment
Companies Equip Four Million Access Lines for Advanced, High-Speed Internet
FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ikanos Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: IKAN), a leading provider of advanced broadband semiconductor and software products for the digital home, and NEC Magnus Communications, Ltd., today announced that the companies have deployed the world's largest VDSL network, reaching a major milestone in their relationship and the industry. Together, the companies have shipped more than four million central office and customer premises equipment products which are enabling delivery of higher bandwidth services to the growing number of VDSL subscribers acrossJapan.
As a result of NEC Magnus' advanced product line, Japan's service providers have been able to hasten rollouts and accelerate return on investment for new broadband services. By leveraging the existing copper infrastructure, NEC Magnus' multi-dwelling unit (MDU) access equipment and customer premises equipment (CPE) are making possible low cost access to applications such as Internet protocol television (IPTV), video on demand, network gaming, peer-to-peer video sharing and video conferencing.
"Ikanos' high performance central office and CPE chipsets allow us to provide the means for service providers to deploy very high speed, affordable broadband to the doorsteps of Japanese homes," said Takashi Senba, associate senior vice president at NEC Magnus. "We have designed with Ikanos' VDSL products since 2002, and look forward to continuing this long-standing relationship through which we advance technologies to address the speed, power and stability required by the broadband market."
Ikanos' fifth generation VDSL2 chipsets are designed to provide the highest throughput and density, with the lowest per port power consumption, thereby enabling NEC Magnus to offer high-density systems that reduce carriers' capital and operating expenditures. The Fx(TM)100100-5 central office and Fx(TM)100100S-5 CPE chipsets offer symmetrical speeds of up to 100 Mbps and are backward compatible with deployed modems, facilitating smooth upgrades for carriers.
"NEC Magnus is a worldwide leader in deploying broadband access lines for high bandwidth services," said Michael Gulett, president and CEO of Ikanos. "We value our relationship with NEC Magnus and we look forward to continuing our collaboration in creating industry leading access equipment inJapan and around the world."
