Industry Veteran Joins Emerging Leader in [Mid-infrared Photonics]

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (EWORLDWIRE) Dec 17, 2008

Maxion Technologies "> today announced that Sohrab Zarrabian has joined the company as chief executive officer and member of the Board of Directors. Zarrabian, bringing over 20 years of experience in the photonics and optical diagnostics markets, takes the reins from co-founder John Bruno.

Bruno, Maxion's president and chief technology officer, will focus on new product development and manufacturing as Maxion prepares for broader market introduction of its Interband Cascade (IC) and Quantum Cascade (QC) lasers and optical sensor [or diagnostic] subsystems.

"Maxion has pioneered the market in commercializing IC and QC lasers and is now ready to move into the next phase of our business," said John Bruno, cofounder and CTO of Maxion. "It is critical that we now capitalize on our momentum by strengthening our leadership position in IC and QC laser design, fabrication, and packaging while successfully introducing our new sensor sub-system products. The addition of Sohrab strengthens our team, and his presence will accelerate our success and relationships with our customer base."

Zarrabian brings to Maxion a strong track record in strategic business development within the photonics and optical sensor markets. Most recently, Zarrabian co-founded YAS Photonics, a start-up company designing and manufacturing infrared sensors for the energy diagnostics industry. Prior to YAS, he held senior roles in strategic business development, product management, and research and development areas at leading companies such as Newport Corporation, JDS Uniphase, OCLI, and the BOC Group. Sohrab has a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Florida and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.

"Sohrab's proven track record in the areas of strategic development in [photonics and optical diagnostics] made him the perfect fit for Maxion at a time when the company is transitioning from an early-stage venture to a scale business," said Cole Van Nice, member of the board at Maxion and partner at Chart Venture Partners. "Sohrab will be able to build on the early success of the company to accelerate and ensure successful new product introduction and revenue growth with major customers in the [industrial, environmental, medical, and security] markets."

"I am thrilled to be joining Maxion at such an exciting and critical phase of the company's development," said Sohrab Zarrabian, Maxion's new CEO. "Maxion is uniquely positioned to expand the market for mid-infrared photonics, offering commercial-ready products with unprecedented speed, sensitivity, and specificity that will revolutionize chemical sensing and related applications. I'm looking forward to working with John Bruno and his team as we take Maxion into the next phase of its growth."
