High School Teacher Sells Ad Space On Exams

"A Southern California calculus teacher says he's selling ad space on his test papers to make up for a cut in his supply budget.

Tom Farber, 47, said 'tough times call for tough actions' so he started selling ad space on his test papers at $10 for a quiz, $20 for a chapter test and $30 for a semester final.

So far, he has collected $350, with two-thirds of the ads being inspirational messages from parents and the remaining ads coming from local businesses such as a dentist whose ad says 'Brace Yourself for a Great Semester!'" UPI.Com

I commend Farber for thinking outside the box, he isn't selling ad space to enrich himself but to buy school supplies. It's a shame that times are so tough that schools have to make drastic cuts in their budgets.

Internet savvy young people are used to Web pages that are saturated with ads, they won't think it's weird that a test paper has a couple of ads. I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as it's not an ad featuring a scantily-clad model. Students don't need to be distracted from a tough final exam.

I hate hokey inspirational messages like "winners never quit, and quitters never win", and ad like that would stress me out and cause me to make mistakes. But I don't see any harm from an ad posted by a dentist or a local business.

I hope the school doesn't get carried away and starts posting ads on the report cards. If a student gets a lousy report card with an ad that reads "This report card is brought to you by McDonald's", he might never go to a McDonald's again
