SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Canadian television viewers will get a chance to learn about the brain health revolution on Thursday night when the documentary "The Brain That Changes Itself" airs on the Canadian Broadcast Corporation network. Based on the best-selling book of the same name by author Norman Doidge, MD, the documentary traces the development of the science of neuroplasticity and features the science, scientists, products and customers of Posit Science Corporation.

The show explains how scientists have discovered that the brain is plastic -- that is, capable of changing its structure and function through intensive, repetitive and progressively challenging use. It highlights the discovery of principles of adult brain plasticity by Posit Science co-founder Michael Merzenich, PhD, among other scientists. Dr. Merzenich is Professor Emeritus at UCSF and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine. His discoveries have led to numerous inventions and have helped to revolutionize how scientists think about the brain.

The documentary also features Posit Science brain fitness programs and their impact on users. Stanley Karansky is a physician who retired at age 80 and was interviewed for the book and documentary. By age 89, he noticed that he was having trouble remembering names, hearing and communicating, and was withdrawing socially. He used the Posit Science Brain Fitness Program, which targets auditory processing and memory, for two months and noticed major improvements in his abilities.

Those improvements have been confirmed in a number of randomized controlled trials, which show that individuals gain, on average, more than ten years in memory and other cognitive abilities. Dr. Karansky also noticed improvement in his driving abilities.

Last month, Posit Science released version 1.1 of InSight, its program designed to improve visual processing and memory. The Posit Science technology used in InSight has been extensively tested in randomized controlled trials and has been the subject of more than two dozen peer-reviewed articles in science and medical journals. It has been shown effective in increasing visual processing speed, improving driving abilities, and improving abilities at skills necessary to maintaining independence.

"The Brain That Changes Itself" is the third documentary to air this month on North American television which discusses brain plasticity and features the science, scientists and products of Posit Science. It joins "The Brain Fitness Program" and "Brain Fitness 2: Sight and Sound," which are two documentaries currently airing acrossthe United States on PBS stations.
