Guests Will Discuss Taking Action to Combat Domestic Violence
November 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day also marks the beginning of the U.N.'s "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence" campaign, which ends on December 10, Human Rights Day.
In October, Secretary Rice urged U.S. ambassadors around the globe to help raise awareness of gender-based violence in their host countries and encouraged U.S. embassies to engage host-country governments, civil society and media during the 16 Days of Activism. In response, Embassy Bratislava will host a digital videoconference with Slovak parliamentarians, government officials and NGO activists to discuss the prevention of violence against women, the protection of victims and how to increase social services.
From 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. EST (14:30 to 16:00 GMT) on November 25, join us to view the webcast of this digital videoconference, with guests Sue Else and Jan Langbein. The speakers will discuss ways to promote collaboration at the local and national levels among private and public partners to combat violence. They will discuss a variety of legal, educational, health and infrastructural reforms and offer firsthand observations of successes and challenges in the field of domestic violence intervention and prevention services.
Sue Else is the president of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, headquartered in Washington. Jan Langbein is a senior policy adviser in the Office on Violence Against Women at the U.S. Department of Justice
