Open Letter to President-Elect Barack Obama From Don Margolis, Chairman and Founder of The Repair Stem Cell Institute
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --
Dear President-Elect Obama:
Your first four year Presidential term will start with billions of dollars
earmarked for stem cell research. As spokesman for the Repair Stem Cell
Institute (RSCI), which is the voice of the Repair Stem Cell research and
treatment industry worldwide, I want to urge you to provide equal federal
funding support for our industry and the medical and scientific professionals,
hospitals, treatment centers and academic leaders that are, today, actively
applying their stem cell expertise in improving the lives of people suffering
with various diseases.
What does the phrase "Repair Stem Cell" mean? And how is this stem cell
life science helping to improve the lives of people around the world?
All of our bodies already contain a cell that "repairs" our bodies and
performs this function every day of our lives. It's called the Repair Stem
Cell. These cells constantly jump to our aid when we need help. Cut your
finger, no problem a Repair Stem Cell will do its work and heal your skin.
Injure another part of your body and Repair Stem Cells are always ready to
jump in and help. Sometimes, though, our bodies need help to muster more of
these Repair Stem Cells to our aid than our bodies normally provide. That's
when we need the help of medical science to supplement our bodies' own tool-
kit.
As the future 44th President ofthe United States this January '09, I urge
you to review the scientific and medical advances of Repair Stem Cells. For
example, Osiris, a U.S. company using Repair Stem Cell science, has a product
that is being evaluated in Phase III clinical trials for three indications,
including acute and steroid refractory Graft versus Host Disease and also
Crohn's disease, and is currently designated by the FDA as both an Orphan Drug
and Fast Track product. Bioheart, another U.S. company, is also in phase
II/III clinical trials seeking to improve the lives of heart failure patients
with active trials in 35 leading centers in the U.S. and 19 overseas using its
own unique Repair Stem Cell technology. Cytori Therapeutics inCalifornia is
already using its special devices and new Repair Stem Cell technology in
Europe and soon in the U.S. to help reconstruct breast tissue in cancer
survivors who have undergone partial mastectomy.
The Repair Stem Cell Institute and its members worldwide need your support
in making sure that the advances already achieved by Repair Stem Cell life
science continue into the future. Millions of people suffering from diabetes,
heart disease, kidney disease, spinal cord injury and many other medical
conditions are looking to you for leadership on stem cell policy. I call upon
you now to include Repair Stem Cell research in all forthcoming federal
funding programs in 2009 and beyond.
The Repair Stem Cell Institute and its members pledge to you, Mr.
President-Elect, its total cooperation in helping all Americans enjoy the
benefits of Repair Stem Cell science in the years ahead.
Sincerely,
Don Margolis
