Communication Professionals get unCONVENTIONal in San Diego
Thousands gather to better understand the power of communication in people's lives
WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 5,500 communication professionals are inSan Diego to share ideas and help improve the way people communicate. The 94th Annual Convention of the National Communication Association continues the longstanding tradition of celebrating all forms of communication during the four day event of sessions, panels and presentations.
Communication in all forms is the basic tenet of society, and NCA members are continually researching and understanding how people communicate. This year's attendees are participating in "unCONVENTIONal" themed sessions that are innovative, creative, and imaginative, and showcase communication's relevance to other disciplines.
"Our 94th annual meeting brings together scholars and teachers from around the country and the world to engage in dialogue and debate, and view the discipline from an unCONVENTIONal lens," said Betsy W. Bach, Ph.D., University of Montana--Missoula and NCA's First Vice President and Primary Convention Planner. "This meeting is the highlight of the academic year for all who study and teach communication."
The Annual Convention features many highlighted events. Gerry Philipsen from the University of Washington will present the Carroll C. Arnold Distinguished Lecture. Entitled "Coming to Terms With Culture" the presentation lays out four successful strategies for different scenarios when individuals communicate with people from various cultures.
In addition, with a thriving membership of academic professionals, NCA strives to better understand the diverse makeup of college classrooms. Featuring Anne D. Neale, President of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, and Michael Berube, the Paterno Family Professor in Literature at Penn State, the forum sheds light on whether there is a liberal bias and what it means for today's college students.
Another event is a town hall forum featuring scholars discussing the 2008 presidential election. This interactive session features conservative and liberal panelists providing their viewpoint on the election, and answering questions from the audience as well as videotaped questions that were submitted by NCA members.
Over 1,200 sessions offer researchers and scholars the opportunity to come together and share ideas. From the 2008 presidential election, crisis communication, gay marriage, children's television content, and politics in sports, all forms of communication are on display at the annual convention.
The convention is being held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, inSan Diego, California. The four day conference begins on Friday November 21. For more information on specific panels and events please visit www.natcom.org/convention.
