Kudzu.com Survey Reveals DIY Projects Are an Unreliable Way to Save in Today's Economy

ATLANTA, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- You might cut back on cups of fancy coffee, purchasing designer duds or even that new car. But according to a new national survey commissioned by online review site Kudzu.com, trying to save money by taking on Do-It-Yourself Home Projects might end up costing you more than hiring a pro. In fact, one in four (25%) Americans have hired a professional to fix or finish a home improvement project they first attempted themselves.

The study, conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of Kudzu, revealed that more than one in three Americans (35%) believe it is more cost effective to hire a professional to do a home improvement project than attempting to do it themselves.

"In today's market, an increasing number of people are forced to do home improvement projects because they can't buy a new place to live," explains Rachel Spasser, Vice President of Marketing & Business Development for Kudzu. "Individuals need to weigh the real cost involved. If tiling your bathroom floor means you're missing your kids' soccer game on a Saturday morning and throwing out your back in the process, is it really worth it?"

With age, people gain more perspective on the issue. Nearly four in ten (38%) Americans ages 45 and older note hiring a professional for a home improvement project would be more cost-effective than doing it themselves, compared to 32 percent of those ages 18-44.

Kudzu (www.kudzu.com), an interactive website that connects consumers with the trustworthy, recommended resources for home, health and other services they need, also asked its users to share their thoughts. From customers who complained about DIY projects that resulted in electrocution and a possum attack to waiting four weeks for paint to dry, 84% reported starting a do-it-yourself home project that didn't go as smoothly as they anticipated. In addition, 32% admitted they had taken on a do-it-yourself project that ended in a disaster.

Six million jobs were performed in 2007 because of Kudzu.com. Local services on the site range from life maintenance to life milestones and business categories include home repair and improvement, legal, health care, pets, childcare, eldercare, real estate, automotive, financial and beauty. The interactive website also helps participating businesses access high-quality leads and referrals from informed customers in their local markets.
