First Student School Bus Drivers Choose Teamsters Union
Naperville, Illinois Drivers Unite for Change in the Workplace
WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- School bus drivers with First Student inNaperville, Illinois, have taken the first step toward a better workplace by voting overwhelmingly, 258-74, to join the Teamsters. The bargaining unit consists of 417 workers.
"We are proud to have theNaperville workers join us," said Teamsters International Vice President John Coli, also the President of Joint Council 25. "These workers have shown a great commitment to joining the Teamsters and we look forward to representing them."
TheNaperville workers are the latest group of First Student drivers inIllinois to join the Teamsters this year. Earlier this year, First Student workers inVilla Park,Alton,Crest Hill andMcHenry voted to join the Teamsters.
This victory is the latest in an effort to organize private school bus and transit workers across the country. Drive Up Standards is a national campaign to improve safety, service and work standards in the private school bus and transit industry. Since the campaign began in 2006, more than 13,400 workers have become Teamsters. The campaign has had more than 100 organizing victories nationwide.
