ASMedia Licenses Range of MIPS(R) Cores for Multimedia SoC Development
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- MIPS
Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard
architectures, processors and analog IP for digital consumer, home networking,
wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that
ASMedia licensed several of its synthesizable processor cores to develop
multimedia SoCs for digital consumer devices. An existing MIPS licensee,
ASMedia has licenses on the MIPS32(R) 4KEc(R), MIPS32(R) 4KEm(TM), and
MIPS32(R) 24KEc(TM) cores for next-generation ICs targeting applications
including digital photo frames, media players, and solid state drives (SSDs).
"MIPS Technologies' cores offer advantages such as low power, excellent
audio/video quality, high performance and reliability, and other features that
are highly important for products like SSDs," said Chewei Lin, president,
ASMedia Technology. "We've already had success with MIPS in digital photo
frames, and now are extending our use into other areas where we can continue
to leverage MIPS' leading processor technology."
"We are pleased that ASMedia, a company with deep experience in IC design,
has extended its commitment to MIPS with this recent agreement," said Brad
Holtzinger, vice president of worldwide sales at MIPS Technologies. "MIPS
continues to make inroads into markets like SSD by offering compelling
technical advantages along with a broad ecosystem of support from middleware,
RTOS, and hardware and software development tool vendors to help companies get
their products to market quickly and confidently."
According to market research firm IDC Research, the worldwide SSD market
generated nearly $400 million in revenues in 2007. IDC predicts that SSD
revenue will increase at a 70% CAGR from 2007 to 2012, with unit shipments
increasing at a slightly faster rate of 76%. IDC says this growth will be
generated by a solid base of revenue in traditional markets and driven by
growth in new markets that SSDs are just beginning to penetrate.
